from the bus stop where kevin collins was last seen waiting for the bus all of those years ago. his mother says police have confirmed the activity out here involve his case. they still have crime scene tape around the house. investigators have been searching. this afternoon the county sheriffs office confirmed sfpd requested a cadaver dog. we saw some of the concrete. police nor the fbi are saying much of anything. on the phone today collins' mother ann said police did find something that is being sent to a state lab for testing. kevin collins disappeared on february 10, 1984 after leaving basketball practice a little early that night. his case made national news and was one of the first high profile missing children cases in san francisco. collins' face was all over fliers and milk cartons in those days before amber alerts and the internet. we had a chance to talk to neighbors today. one neighbor told me when her husband went down to ask about why police were out here searching this area the name kevin collins was already on her mind. tonight we are hearing again from his mother. p
joins us from san francisco with the new lead in the kevin collins case. good morning, tara. >> reporter: the last person that kevin collins was seen talking to was a tall blond man with a black dog and a person matching that description was a person of interest in the case. used to live at this home here. he has since died. investigators revisiting the case realized that cadaver dogs were never used during the search of a home. san francisco police and fbi agents spent 12 hours out here. they did detect remains under the garage door. this is just blocks from where ten-year-old kevin collins was last seen waiting for a bus after school at masonic and oak back in 1984. >> we were able to pull up the concrete and discovered there were bones located underneath the concrete. medical examiners did respond on scene. they did a preliminary investigation of the bones and they believe it to be animal origin. not human origin. >> reporter: we want to emphasize the people that live in the duplex are not suspects. the man that was a person of interest was questioned after kevin vanished. he had an a

to you later, thanks. >>> new developments tonight in the decades old search for kevin collins. investigators have zeroed in on a house just a block from where the boy vanished back in 1984. cbs 5 reporter, don knapp, on what they found. don. >> liz, many of us who covered this story of kevin collins, as the first really big case of a missing child. despite tremendous efforts, police and countous stories, the case revealed how frustrating a case could be of a missing child for everyone involved. police aren't saying why they renewed their search. cadaver dogs indicated there were bones not far from where kevin was last seen. >> the concrete was removed and several bones were located. the san francisco medical examiner's office did respond to evaluate the bones. at this time, under preliminary investigation, it's determined that the bones are believed to be of animal remain, not human remains. >> in february of 1984, kevin was last seen at a bus stop on his way home from basketball practice at st. agnus school. it was a first in a series of searches in the 80s and early 90s.

anne makovec is at the scene with what neighbors remember about the time when kevin collins went missing many years ago. ann. >> reporter: anyone who is around the bay area or california remembers the kevin collins case and now it is all centered on the duplex here behind me. they found some bones there. now, the preliminary analysis shows that they were animal bones. but police say that further analysis of the bones is necessary. they're not saying a whole lot else this morning. kevin collins last seen about a block from here on the way home from basketball practice back in '84 on oak street. witnesses say he was pushed into a car with two teenagers wearing mohawks. police aren't saying why they have renewed their search for kevin. but we know cadaver dogs did indicate that there were bones beneath the concrete floor of a garage in this duplex here on masonic and police said a man who lived in the house at the time did match the description of a man seen talking to ken. that person has sense died. we did speak with a neighbor though who knew
known, the retirement of vice president kevin martin and the retirement of our paralegal, steve johnson. that most recently happened two weeks ago. we are definitely going to fill the void that steve has left, i hope to fill the void and fill the shoes of kevin martin. we know it's a lot to ask but i can assure you that president delanus and i will make every effort to work with the chief as we have done since being on the executive board of the poa for the last 9 years. but before i do i want to acknowledge kevin martin who has 28 years of service not just with the san francisco police department but the san francisco sheriff's department and especially acknowledge steve johnson, who joined the san francisco police department in 1971, served 30 years and since that time has worked tirelessly along with kevin for the rights of our members and he has worked with every commissioner here. he's going to be a big loss to the poa, he wanted to be here tonight, he could not make it. he is in good health and spirits but i do have letters to each one of the commissioners on behalf of steve.
